Duke Blue Devils freshman long stick midfielder Wilson Stephenson was released from the hospital on Sunday. He suffered a leg injury in the Blue Devil’s NCAA quarterfinal match against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Hofstra University on May 18.
He was released from the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York City. Following his injury, he was transported to Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, New York.
After being at the Nassau County Medical Center, he was transported to the Hospital of Special Surgery on the evening of May 18. While there, he underwent multiple surgeries.
I think I can speak for the entire lacrosse community that we are delighted to learn of Wilson’s release [on Sunday] from HSS,” Blue Devils head coach John Danowski said. “He has been tested in a way that very few of us can imagine. He has handled his situation with incredible character and humility. I look forward to seeing him back on campus.”
The Greenwich, Connecticut native played in 16 games for the Blue Devils. He had 15 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.
In addition, he was one of three freshman on the team to play at least 10 games.
“It’s great to finally be home after these two weeks,” Stephenson said. “The team of doctors and nurses, led by Duke alum and former lacrosse player Dr. Bill Ricci, was outstanding. The support from the Duke community and particularly past and present players has been incredibly helpful to myself and my family. But in all, this just makes me even more excited to get back to campus and start playing again.”
