The National Hot Rod Association made the decision to postpone their national event at Heartland Motorsports Park. The event, Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties, will attempt to be made up in the fall.
However, due to the NHRA’s upcoming schedule, which will feature nearly every race weekend on the road — unless it changes — will make it tricky. This event will likely be canceled like the Denver and Brainerd events that are currently “postponed.”
The logistical nightmare of trying to fit these events into an off weekend is going to be tough. The event — which was scheduled for August 21-23 in Topeka, Kansas — was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Topeka is fortunate to have a county health department that sincerely cares about public safety and also understands the economic impact of one of Kansas’ largest events,” Heartland Motorsports Park owner Chris Payne said. “It is after many conversations, the decision was made to postpone the event to the fall. Heartland Motorsports Park holds many milestone records. The cooler fall weather will not only be more comfortable for the spectators, but also brings favorable conditions, great racing, camping, and the chance of setting new records.”
Now, with the postponement, the NHRA will have a gap between their Dodge NHRA Indy Nationals presented by Pennzoil on August 6-9, before their proposed event at Atlanta Dragway on August 28-30 in Commerce, Georgia if the event happens. Then, following that event, the teams will head back to Brownsburg, Indiana for the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis on Sept. 3-6.
The NHRA then is expected to go on a daunting task — if it actually happens — of racing almost every weekend for the next two months beginning on Sept. 11-13 at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania. The following weekend, the teams are expected to be in Concord, North Carolina for the NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway.
The professional teams will then return to Gainesville, Florida for the historic Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals. The teams arrived in Florida in March for this event, before the schedule was halted for four months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In October, the teams are supposed to be at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois on October 2-4. The following weekend, the teams are supposed to be at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tennessee. Several days later, the teams are slated to be at the AAA Texas NHRA Nationals at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas.
The NHRA — if it happens — will end the month of October at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals Presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. Then, in the final two days of the month and November 1st, the teams will be at the Dodge NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Again, if it happens, the final event of the season will be the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Pomona, California. However, at this time, there is some speculation that no events can be held at the fairgrounds, where this track is located.
