The Minnesota Timberwolves have elected not to go the conventional route when hiring their next head coach. Traditionally, an interim head coach would be named after their full-time head coach was fired.
On Sunday night, the Timberwolves fired head coach Ryan Saunders. The team did not hire an interim coach.
Instead, the Timberwolves have made the in-season decision to hire Chad Finch as their full-time head coach. He has agreed to a multi-year deal.

“I am excited to announce Chris Finch as our next head coach,” Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas said. “Chris brings a wealth of basketball experience from his time in the NBA, G League, and Internationally. He is one of the most creative basketball minds in the NBA, has success maximizing players, and I am excited to see him bring our team to the next level and beyond.”
Finch and Rosas were together in the Houston Rockets organization. This is Finch’s first NBA head coaching position.
He previously served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors, New Orleans Pelicans, Denver Nuggets, and the Rockets.

As a G League head coach, Finch led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to two straight G League Finals appearances. He went 67-33 as the Vipers head coach.
He led the Vipers to the 2010 G League Championship. Finch also was named the G League’s Coach of the Year that season.
Finch is taking over a team that has the worst record in the NBA. He needs to find the chemistry to turn things around with Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, and Anthony Edwards leading the team.
