Holland has been promoted to the team’s Senior Vice President.

“This is a truly exciting day for the Detroit Red Wings, we are thrilled to welcome Steve Yzerman back to Hockeytown,” said Ilitch. “Steve has produced tremendous results as a General Manager in the National Hockey League, as well as an executive in international competition. He is a smart, driven, competitive and determined executive with outstanding leadership skills, as demonstrated both over his playing and management careers.

“Steve and Ken have proven to be two of the most successful general managers of their era, and to have Steve leading our hockey operations and Ken providing valued support is a tremendous advantage for our organization. I believe we took a strong management team and made it even stronger today.”

Yzerman had been in an advisory role during the final year of his contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2018-19 season. He was replaced by Assistant General Manager Julien BriseBois, who took over as the team’s GM.

Before stepping down on Sept. 11, 2018, he spent nearly eight-years as the team’s Vice-President and General Manager. He was hired by Tampa Bay on May 25, 2010.

Following the end of his career, he also was the Red Wings Vice-President and Alternate Governor. In a 2016 story in The Detroit News, Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch admitted to attempting to promote Holland to name Yzerman as the team’s GM.

However, Holland, who had been the team’s GM since 1997, declined the promotion.

He spent his entire 22-year career with the Red Wings. His career began in 1983 before ending in 2006.

During his tenure, the team won three Stanley Cup Championships.

The 53-year-old Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada native appeared in 1,514 games during his playing career. He had 692 goals and 1,063 assists for 1,755 points.

Yzerman also had a 184 +/- and 924 PIM.

He was a 10-time All-Star during his career. Yzerman also was the first 18-year-old to be selected to an All-Star Game in 1984.

In addition, he won the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1989 and the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1998. He added the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2000. In addition, he also won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2003 and the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2006.

Besides winning three Stanley Cups as a player, he won the Stanley Cup as an executive in 2008.

At the time of his retirement, he was first in Red Wings history in assists, second in goals and points and fourth in games played. He was also second in seasons and games played with one franchise.

Flyers acquire Petr Mrázek

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

The Philadelphia Flyers were in desperate need of a goalie. They were down to their third-string net minder.

The Flyers acquired help late on Monday night. They pulled off a deal with the Detroit Red Wings to acquire Petr Mrázek.

Both sides began negotiations early on Monday. The Flyers gave up a fourth-round draft pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

There is also a conditional pick in the mix. Should the Flyers re-sign Mrázek, they will give the Red Wings a conditional third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

The 26-year-old has spent his entire career with the Red Wings. He was their 141st overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft.

Mrázek is making $4 million this season in the final year of his two-year, $8 million deal with the Red Wings. Detroit is retaining 50%, $2 million, of his salary in this trade.

He is the third Czech player on the Flyers. He joins Radko Gudas and Michal Neuvirth.

Neuvirth was injured on Sunday against the New York Rangers. The Flyers were already without Brian Elliott, who is expected to return in March after having cord muscle surgery.

He was 5-3-2 in his last 10 games with the Red Wings. He also had a 2.01 goals against average and a .937 save percentage.

Daley signs three-year deal with Detroit

By Maximillian C. Burgos | Contributing Writer

After a Stanley Cup win with the Pittsburgh Penguins, 13-year veteran Trevor Daley has signed with the Detroit Red Wings. He has received a three-year deal, $9.5 million contract.

Daley spent the first 11-years of his career with the Dallas Stars after being drafted 43rd in the 2nd round of the 2002 draft.

Daley then spent the first half of the ’15-’16 season, playing for the Chicago Blackhawks, where he played 29 games accumulating 6 assists.

He was then traded to the Penguins for the second part of the season, where he played 53 games accumulating in 6 goals and 16 assists.

He returned to Penguins for the ’16-’17 season, playing an important role in their success as a team collecting 5 goals and 14 assists in 56 games.

In his 13-year career, Daley has played in 894 games during the regular season accumulating 78 goals, 200 assists, and a +/- of 22.

Detroit, this past season, did not make the playoffs for the first time since the 1990 season for what seems like an overwhelming amount of reasons. A lackluster defense had to be at the top of the list of reasons.

”As we headed into free agency, one of the areas we really wanted to address was our blue line,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland acknowledged. ”We felt we had to do something.”

Daley decided to head to the Motor City after the Red Wings expressed their interest in making him a priority and their plans to get back into the playoffs.

Daley expressed his respect for the team and their history, ultimately signing with them.

Settlemyre pranks the Flyers with a snake prank

Today is Halloween around the United States. Around the country, people are ready for this holiday, as they attempt to spook their friends, families, or even children.

Some just play pranks on each other, while others go all-out in their costumes’ to look scary.

The Philadelphia Flyers got into the Halloween spirit when the Equipment Manager Derek Settlemyre pranked many of the players. He told all of them to open a cooler, then they were all surprised.

Once the players opened the cooler, they saw a snake, before freaking out. It was a fake snake, but they all still freaked out. It is not clear when the prank took place, before it was uploaded to FlyersTV.

Thankfully for them, they won’t have to experience what’s in the cooler during practice, or even games, because there won’t be any snakes on the ice. But if they’re at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich. playing against the Detroit Red Wings they may have to deal with an octopus if one of the Red Wings players score a hat trick.

The team is 4-6-0 on the young season. They lost last night to the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-3, in Tampa.

The team will return to the ice tomorrow as they travel to take on the Florida Panthers at 7 pm on TCN.

Young defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere debuts

The Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere made his NHL debut last night against the Detroit Red Wings. With injuries to key defenseman, the Flyers had to make a roster move for Saturday’s game.

Gostisbehere is filling in for both Braydon Coburn and Andrew MacDonald. Both could miss up to four weeks, which will give the youngster more time to prove his self to Ron Hextall, the Flyers GM, to stay beyond that point.

Head Coach Craig Berube used him wisely, as he only played 12:27 minutes. While he was out there, he looked good offensively with nice passes to his teammates. In addition, he also had a shot on goal.

The 21-year-old had two assists in three American Hockey League games this season. In his Flyers debut, he had -1 in plus-minus.

“You come up with a plan that in a perfect world you can stick to, but you have to make adjustments based on circumstances,” Hextall said.

It’ll be interesting to see who Berube pairs him with moving forward. Should he be successful in his Flyers stint, he could also possibly force the team to move one of the injured players to give him more playing time this season and beyond.
