Michigan State deserves the NCAA’s sixth death penalty

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

Michigan State University needs to receive the death penalty from the NCAA. If all these allegations are true — and we believe they are true — the Spartans need to be punished to the fullest extent.

Even the NCAA reportedly knew of these allegations. If Mark Emmert, the NCAA President, knew of the allegations, like it is to be believed that he did, he needs to resign and be punished for not doing anything.

This culture of sexual assault at the school is sickening. It is even worse than the Jerry Sandusky case that happened several years ago to Penn State.

Sandusky, a sicko, and former Penn State assistant coach molested young children, was arrested and sentenced to the rest of his life in jail.

A few Penn State officials, including Joe Paterno, who had his legendary stature tarnished after not telling the school of the allegations. However, like the Michigan State case, they refused to do anything about this because they did not want to ruin their reputation as a prominent athletic department that makes millions yearly.

Several Penn State officials were charged with perjury in that case. They were initially suspended or dismissed for covering up incidents for failing to notify the authorities.

Former school president Graham Spanier was forced to resign over the allegations. Paterno was fired by the school despite Sandusky maintaining his innocence, he said.

Louis Freeh, a former FBI Director, was commissioned to investigate the program. He found, “total and consistent disregard by the most senior leaders at Penn State for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims.”

In July 2012, the NCAA sanctions were $60 million in a fine, a four-year postseason ban, scholarship reductions, and vacated all wins from 1998 through 2011. The sanctions were considered the most severe ever to an NCAA affiliated school.

Two years later, the NCAA changed its mind and rescinded its postseason ban. They also restored scholarships and gave the school back its wins from 1998 through 2011.

The abuse at Michigan State has reportedly been going on for more than two decades. Not only does it include those allegations against former team doctor Larry Nassar, who was recently sentenced to likely the rest of his life in jail, but allegations against the football and basketball programs.

There were reportedly 14 different people at Michigan State, who hid allegations of Nassar abuse. Plus, there were more than 100 complaints against him.

In addition, there were numerous other complaints and sexual assault allegations against Spartan football and basketball players. ESPN detailed these allegations in an Outside the Lines, an investigative branch of ESPN, on Friday.

According to Outside the Lines, “[they] found a pattern of widespread denial, inaction, and information suppression of such allegations by officials ranging from campus police to the Spartan athletic department, whose top leader, Mark Hollis, announced his retirement on Friday. The actions go well beyond the highly-publicized case of former MSU athletic physician Larry Nassar.”

The ESPN report said that the school fought three-times in court, which were all unsuccessful, to withhold names of athletes in campus police records. The Outside the Lines report also deleted information in several records to make them unreadable.

At least 16 Michigan State football players have been accused of sexual assault, or violence against women since head football coach Mark D’Antonio took over in 2007. He was even reportedly in charge of discipline in one of the cases, according to the Outside the Lines report.

They also brought to the table new allegations in never-published reports involving Tom Izzo’s basketball program.

Travis Walton, who has since been suspended by the Los Angeles Clippers organization, was not identified in the Outside the Lines online report, but was identified on the Outside the Lines TV story, was allowed to continue to be a student coach after he was charged with punching a female MSU student in 2010 at a bar. Then, months later, he was accused of sexually assaulting a different female student.

Michigan State reportedly knew of allegations against Nassar dating back to 1997. They also did not report to federal officials in 2014, according to the Outside the Lines report, that the school had several Title IX and campus investigations ongoing against Nassar.

“Whatever protocol or policy was in place, whatever frontline staff might normally be involved in response or investigation, it all got kind of swept away and it was handled more by administration [and] athletic department officials,” former MSU sexual assault counselor Lauren Allswede, who worked for the school for seven-years, said to Outside the Lines. “It was all happening behind closed doors. …. None of it was transparent or included people, who would normally be involved in certain decisions.

Nassar, according to Outside the Lines, did not officially get investigated until 2014. He was still employed by the school until September 2016.

Lou Anna Simon, who reportedly kept her job because she was a ‘good fundraiser,’ resigned as president this week. Hollis also resigned. Izzo and D’Antonio need to resign. The athletic departments’ senior leaders also need to resign.

They need to start fresh. They also need to suffer penalties to their athletic department, as well as the football and basketball teams. The 2018 football season and 2018-19 basketball season needs to be canceled immediately. This will hit them where it hurts.

The NCAA needs to give the Spartans the sixth death penalty of all-time and cancel their seasons. The last-time one was levied was against the Southern Methodist University football team in 1987.

When they received the death penalty, their 1987 season was canceled. All the home games for the following season was also canceled. They were allowed to play their away games in 1988, though.

The probation for the program through the death penalty ran through 1990. Their bowl ban lasted three seasons through 1989.

They lost 55 scholarships in a four-year span. They also banned several boosters. The program was only allowed to hire five football assistant coaches instead of the NCAA-regulated nine assistants at the time.

The school was not allowed to have off-campus recruiting visits until August 1988.

The NCAA last handed out the death penalty in the MacMurray College case when they were hit with the death penalty for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons for men’s tennis. They also gave out another death penalty to a school outside of Division I when they hit Morehouse College, a Division II school, received the death penalty in men’s soccer in 2004 and 2005.

The NCAA has the power to ban any institution from competing in a sport. In 1985, the NCAA Council passed a “repeat violator” rule. The rule, which stipulates, that if a second major violation occurs at any institution within five years of being on probation in the same sport or another sport, that institution can be barred from competing in the sport involving the second violation for either one or two seasons.

The school can also be stripped of its right to vote at NCAA Conventions for four years. The NCAA ‘has the power to ban a school from competing in a sport without any preliminaries in cases of particularly egregious violations.’

If they did not want to hit Penn State with the death penalty, Michigan State’s lack of institutional control of its entire athletic department deserves to be hit with the death penalty in multiple sports.

“The basketball world is a sadder place today [Monday] with the passing of Jud Heathcote,” Izzo said in a statement. “No one cared more about the welfare of the game than Jud. He was a coach’s coach and a mentor to many. …. Without a doubt, he was one of the most influential people in my life — giving me a chance when no one else would.

“Any coaching success I’ve ever had is because of him. Long after he left Michigan State, he was still one of the first people I would call when I had a tough decision in coaching or [in] life.”

Heathcote, was born in Harvey, North Dakota, attended Washington State University from 1946-1949. After being a high school head coach from 1950 through 1964, he was hired by his alma mater in 1964, where he coaches through 1971, as an assistant coach.

He then was hired by the Montana Grizzlies in 1971, where he coaches for six seasons. He had an 80-53 record, before becoming the Spartans head coach in 1976. He was 339-221 with the Spartans and finished his career with an overall record of 419-274.

Besides the 1979 National Championship, he won the Big Sky Conference twice as a head coach. He also won the Big Ten Conference three-times. He was also the 1990 NABC Coach of the Year and was the 1978 and 1986 Big Ten Coach of the Year.

He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.

College Football Playoff teams announced

The College Football Playoff final version of 2015 has been released. The top four teams after Championship Saturday were the same top four teams that made the College Football Playoff.

The only thing that happened was the Michigan State Spartans jumping the Oklahoma Sooners for the third position. The Spartans defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Conference Championship in Indianapolis last night, while the Sooners sat out.

The Clemson Tigers will face the Sooners in one national semi-final in the Capital One Orange Bowl at SunLife Stadium in Miami, Florida on December 31st on ESPN. The Tigers have held the top spot for all six weeks of the rankings.

These two teams played last season in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The then ranked No. 17 ranked Tigers defeated the Sooners 40-6. The Sooners scored just six points in the fourth quarter with a 11-yard run by Alex Ross with the Michael Hunnicutt extra point blocked.

The Tigers scored 40 points in the first three quarters.

Sooners quarterback Trevor Knight, who now the back-up to Baker Mayfield, went 17 of 37 for 103 yards and threw three interceptions.

Deshaun Watson, a sophomore quarterback, was not involved in last year’s game. Cole Stoudt went 26 of 36 for 319 yards and three touchdowns.

The Sooners have defeated every single team that defeated them from last year’s schedule. They will have the chance to defeat the Tigers later this month for the season sweep, as they’ll have 25-days for the motivation factor.

The other national semi-final will be the Alabama Crimson Tide vs. the Michigan State Spartans in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on ESPN. They haven’t faced each other since January 1st, 2011.

This is the second straight College Football Playoff between the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten Conference. Last year, the Ohio State Buckeyes shocked the Crimson Tide en route to their College Football Playoff National Championship win over the Oregon Ducks.

The Crimson Tide defeated the Spartans, 49-7, in the Capital One Bowl (now the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl) in 2011. It is the most lopsided Capital One Bowl win in history.

Like the Sooners, the Spartans scored late in this game. The Spartans scored with 5:45 remaining in the game when Keith Nichol hit Bennie Fowler with a 49-yard touchdown to make it 49-6, before Dan Conroy made it 49-7 with the extra point.

The Tide have lost their past two games, both in the Sugar Bowl. They’ve lost 45-31 on January 2nd, 2014 to the Sooners in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

On January 1st, 2015, they lost 42-35 to the Buckeyes.

The Crimson Tide hasn’t played in the Cotton Bowl, which was the Cotton Bowl Classic, since January 1st, 2006. They defeated 13-10 to the Texas Tech Red Raiders under former head coach Mike Shula, who is now the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator.

The winners will face off in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, January 11th at 8:30 PM EST.

Will Muschamp is putting his South Carolina staff together

As the South Carolina Gamecocks are set to hire Will Muschamp as their next head coach, he’s wasting no time in putting his staff together. He reportedly already has two coaches in mind to be on his next staff.

Those coaches are Kurt Roper and Travaris Robinson, who are expected to have prominent positions on his staff, according to FootballScoop. Roper is expected to be named the team’s offensive coordinator.

Robinson is expected to be named the team’s defensive coordinator.

Roper will return to the college game once Muschamp makes these moves. He’s currently the Cleveland Browns Senior Offensive Assistant.

Muschamp and Roper previously worked together during the 2014 season with the Florida Gators when Roper served as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Robinson also has previous experience working with Muschamp. He was the Gators defensive backs coach from 2011 through 2014. When Muschamp became the Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator, he brought Robinson with him.

This will be Robinson’s first job as a defensive coordinator. Besides being a graduate assistant with the Tigers, he’s been a defensive backs coach since 2008.

According to reports, Ellis Johnson and Brad Lawing are expected to be on the staff, as well. It’s not known what roles these two will have, as they return to South Carolina.

Johnson has been out of work after being fired by the Tigers after the 2014 season when he was their defensive coordinator. When he was with South Carolina from 2008 through 2011, he was the Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers coach.

He could have a Senior role with the team and has previous head coaching experience with The Citadel and Southern Miss. He has a 17-40 head coaching record, though.

Lawing would come to South Carolina from the Florida State Seminoles, where he’s been the Defensive Ends/Outside Linebackers coach this season.

Lawing and Muschamp worked together at Florida, where he was the assistant head coach and defensive line coach. Prior to working with Muschamp, he’s also worked with other prominent head coaches in Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, Nick Saban at Michigan State and Mack Brown at Appalachian State.

Muschamp has also said that he’ll want Marcus Lattimore on his coaching staff. The former running back, who injured his knee and never had a professional career, could potentially be named the running backs coach.

He’s also reached out to Clemson Tigers co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott for the same role with the Gamecocks. However, Scott hasn’t accepted it yet – if at all – as he’s coaching with the No. 1 team in the country right now.

Scott and Muschamp hasn’t worked together as Scott has been with the Tigers for the past seven-years as a full-time assistant coach.

The latest college football playoff rankings are out. However, nothing is changed in the Top 4.

The Clemson Tigers are No. 1 and have remained in the top spot since the initial college football rankings came out. If they can win one more game, they’ll have the top spot in the college football playoffs in January.

The Tigers will face No. 10 North Carolina Tar Heels in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game. The game will be the first meeting between the school’s this season.

The Alabama Crimson Tide is the No. 2 team. They have been in the No. 2 spot since they defeated previously No. 2 LSU Tigers.

The Crimson Tide are the heavy favorites against the No. 18 Florida Gators in the Southeastern Conference Championship game in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday. The way the Gators played in the past two weeks, it wouldn’t be surprising if this game becomes a blowout.

The Oklahoma Sooners are the No. 3 team. Their regular season is complete and will be watching on Championship Saturday.

They defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys to win the Big 12 Conference Championship.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are the No. 4 team. They are undefeated on the season like the Tigers.

The Hawkeyes have their biggest challenge this weekend in the Big Ten Conference as they face the Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans are the first team out as the No. 5 team.

Fellow Big Ten school and reigning College Football Playoff Champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes, are the No. 6 team. They lost to the Spartans by a game-winning field goal last weekend.

Clemson leads the initial College Football Playoff rankings

The initial College Football Playoff rankings were released a short time ago. In the Top Four, the Clemson Tigers lead the way.

The Tigers are undefeated and many thought they would be the top team. Following them are the LSU Tigers.

The other team from Death Valley is also undefeated on the season. They have a huge game this Saturday night against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The defending National Champions Ohio State Buckeyes are third. The Buckeyes have been able to escape by even though they’ve had quarterback problems all season long.

The Crimson Tide are fourth and the showdown in Alabama may eliminate one of these SEC schools.

Notre Dame is on the outside looking in and they barely got past the Temple Owls, 24-20, in South Philadelphia.

Baylor Bears are sixth at the moment, while the Michigan State Spartans are seventh. TCU Horned Frogs are eighth, while the undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes are ninth.

The one-loss Florida Gators are 10th.

Georgia Tech makes history in miracle finish

First, Michigan vs. Michigan State. Now, Florida State vs. Georgia Tech.

For the second straight weekend, there was a miracle finish to end the game. The Michigan rivals had the game end on a punt blocked.

Tonight, the Seminoles (6-1) lost on a blocked field goal attempt. After being picked up, the ball was returned for a 78-yard return and the win by Georgia Tech (3-5).

The Yellow Jackets defeated the Seminoles, 22-16, in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech shut out the 9th ranked offense in the second half. They scored three points in the first quarter, then 13-points in the second.

In addition, it is their first win over a ranked FSU team when they were untangled. Previously, they were 0-8.

Plus, it is FSU’s first loss in the last 29 games vs. Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.
