Timberwolves center KAT announced parents have the coronavirus

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns made an emotional announcement regarding the coronavirus early Wednesday morning via Instagram. He admitted that his mother is suffering from the COVID-19 in the video.

He also said that his mother is in a medically-induced coma, as her condition deteriorated. He said towards the end of the video that his mother will beat it.

Also in the video, he said that his father, Karl, was also sick. We were able to confirm on Wednesday night through sources that his father also has the coronavirus.

“The Timberwolves organization extends its support and prayers to Jackie and the entire Towns family during this difficult time,” the Timberwolves said in a statement. “Jackie is a part of our extended family and we, along with the rest of the NBA and its fans, will fight this battle with the Towns family. We are proud of Karl’s commitment to helping others, most recently with his donation of $100,000 to Mayo Clinic to further testing for COVID-19. Our organization is supporting all of our players’ and staff’s families to ensure they are up to date on how to stay safe, and where the nearest testing facilities are located. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted by this pandemic.”

According to the Johns Hopkins Resource Center, there have been 471,783 cases worldwide, as of March 26, 2020 at 12:43 am EST. China is leading the world with 81,727 cases, followed by Italy with 74,386 and the United States with 69,171.

In total, there have been 21,306 deaths, including Italy leading the way with 7,503 deaths. Spain is next with 3,647 and China is third with 3,169.

The United States is not tallied as a whole, but individual cities, as New York City, New York, has had 280 deaths. King, Washington has had 100 deaths. The third next state or location in the United States is New Jersey with 44.

Yet, 114,858 people have survived. China leads the group of these locations with 61,201 recovered individuals. Iran is next with 9,625 and Italy is third with 9,362.

“I think it’s important that everyone understands the severity of what’s happening in the world right now with the coronavirus, and I think where my life is right now could help, so I decided to do this video and give you an update of where I’m at,” Towns said during a nearly six-minute video posted to Instagram. “I was told early last week my parents weren’t feeling well. My first reaction to her was to go seek medical attention immediately. There’s no reason to wait, just go to the nearest hospital. And after a couple days of not showing any signs of improvement, I was very adamant on the first day to go to a hospital and seek further evaluation.

“Specifically, my sister told her she needs to get checked for corona. I don’t think anyone really understood what it was, with deteriorating condition. She kept getting worse, she kept getting worse, and the hospital was doing everything they can.”

Towns is hoping, like he said, that his parents will be able to beat this. 616 people have recovered in the United States through the data provided by this resource center.

“She just wasn’t getting better,” Towns continued. “Her fever was never cutting from 103, maybe go down to 101.9 with the meds, and then immediately spike back up during the night. She was very uncomfortable. Her lungs were getting worse, her cough was getting worse. She was deteriorating. She was deteriorating — and we always felt that the next medicine would help. This is the one that’s going to get it done. This mixture is going to get it done.”

Hawks acquires Timberwolves’ Teague, Graham

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

The Atlanta Hawks have acquired a backup point guard for Trae Young. The team acquired point guard Jeff Teague in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In the deal, the Hawks also acquired swingman Treveon Graham. In exchange for Teague and Graham, the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired swingman Allen Crabbe.

This is the third trade involving Crabbe since July 2017. In addition, this is the second deal involving him since July.

He was traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Atlanta Hawks on July 6, 2019. He went to Atlanta with Nickeil Alexander-Walker and a 2020 first-round draft pick.

In return, the Nets received Taurean Prince and a 2021 second-round draft pick.

It comes full circle as Teague was traded in 2016 for a draft pick that became Prince. Then, he was traded for Crabbe, who just months earlier, was traded for Prince.

Teague is in the final year of his agreement at $19 million this season. Crabbe is also in the final year of his agreement at $18.5 million.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid reacts to a call against the Detroit Pistons

Embiid, KAT fight in Philadelphia

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

There was a fight in the NBA on Wednesday. The Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid and Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl Anthony Towns went at each other during their game at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

As a result of the fight between the two big men, both were ejected from the contest. In addition, both men are likely looking at a multi-game suspension for their actions.

It appeared – at least according to the video –- that Embiid may have hit Towns in the face. The Wolves center did not like it, so he went after the center representing the City of Brotherly Love.

“First of all, I aint no b*tch,” Embiid said after the game, according to NBC Philadelphia’s John Clark. “I like to get in people’s minds. I have real estate in their heads.

“I was built for this city. You’ve got to be a Broad Street bully.”

The 76ers won the contest with a 117-98 win over the Timberwolves. But this game will be marred by the fight that happened between the two big men.

Embiid led the 76ers with 19 points before his ejection. He also had five rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 20 minutes.

Towns had 13 points before leaving the game. He also had six rebounds, one assist, two steals, and one block in 22 minutes.

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Andrew Wiggins dribbling the ball against the Dallas Mavericks

Wolves looking to deal Wiggins

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

The Minnesota Timberwolves are exploring ways to rid themselves of Andrew Wiggins’ contract, according to Sports Illustrated’s Jake Fischer. The former No. 1 overall pick has not lived up to expectations.

Wiggins has four-years left on his contract. He signed a five-year, $147 million deal with the franchise in 2017 that kicked in before last season.

Despite having a max contract, he has not produced like a max player should. In fact, last season, he show a career-low 41.2% from the field.

Plus, he also made less than 70% of his free throw attempts.

The 24-year-old may need to find another home to finally become the player that he was drafted to be. Despite his age — and with his massive contract — the Wolves are going to have a tough time dealing him.

But it only takes one team in order to accept the deal with Wiggins.

During his one season plus seasons in Minnesota, former Timberwolves player Jimmy Butler clashed with Wiggins. He was very critical of the young Canadian.

The beef also led to a beef between Wiggins’ brother and Butler. And in addition, Wiggins and former NBA player Stephen Jackson.

Wiggins was traded to the Timberwolves in a blockbuster deal that sent Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has spent the last five seasons in Minnesota.

This past season, Wiggins made 73 appearances, including 73 starts. He averaged 18.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.7 blocks in 34.8 minutes per game.

He has only played two full seasons in his career in 2016-17 and 2017-18. He averaged a career-best 23.6 points per game.

Timberwolves name Rosas as President, Basketball Operations

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired Gersson Rosas as their new President of Basketball Operations. Rosas had his second interview with the team on Wednesday when he was offered the position.

He will work with GM Scott Layden and head coach Ryan Saunders. Both were working on multi-year extensions after the season.

Rosas is the first Latino top basketball executive, according to Wojnarowski. The last person, who had this title with the Timberwolves was Tom Thibodeau, who served as Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations until he was fired in Jan. 2019.

He accepts the Timberwolves position after being considered for a position with the Washington Wizards. Besides Rosas, Danny Ferry — who was most recently the interim GM of the New Orleans Pelicans — and Oklahoma City Thunder Vice President of Basketball Operations Troy Weaver, and Wizards Interim GM Tommy Sheppard are being considered for the Wizards permanent GM role.

“Gersson has been an unbelievable person to work with,” Morey told ESPN. “He’s been way overqualified for his job for a while here. He’s more than earned his shot, although I wish he would’ve gone East. We’re going to have an extremely tough competitor in the West.

“Minnesota is going to find how forward-thinking, how hard working and how talented he is at putting together a winning team.”

Before coming to the Timberwolves, he worked under Morey with the Rockets. He most recently served as their Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations from Dec. 2013 through 2019.

Rosas also worked for the Rockets from Aug. 2004 through July 2013. He began with the team as a video coordinator, before moving up through the ranks.

He had also served as the GM of the Rio Grande Valley team, the Rockets D-League team, in four seasons. His team won two championships and made it to the D-League Finals in three of those four seasons.

He also served as the Dallas Mavericks GM for several months in 2013. Rosas resigned from the Mavericks job after he felt uncomfortable working with owner Mark Cuban and president Donnie Nelson.

Timberwolves retaining interim head coach Ryan Saunders

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

The Minnesota Timberwolves are retaining interim head coach Ryan Saunders. He will be named the permanent head coach moving forward.

He was named the team’s interim head coach when the team fired Tom Thibodeau in Jan. Scott Layden was also named interim general manager when the move to fire Thibodeau was made.

Layden is expected to be retained, as well. After Thibodeau was fired, the team went 16-24.

This will be a new time for the Timberwolves, as they look to build around Karl-Anthony Towns. Layden will have to find out what to do with Andrew Wiggins and Gorgi Dieng, who have not lived up to expectations.

It may be tough, but Layden should attempt to deal both players. He should attempt to try to get role players to play around KAT, who is the centerpiece of the franchise.

Going into the 2019-20 season, the Timberwolves will not have to worry about changes, as there will be stability with Layden and Saunders. The beginning of this season, there were problems with Jimmy Butler and Wiggins, which led Butler to force a trade.

He was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

One year after reaching the NBA playoffs, the Timberwolves finished outside of the playoffs this season. They were defeated 120-100 on Tuesday night by the Toronto Raptors.

That loss gave the Wolves a 36-45 record. Their season will come to an end on Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets in Denver, Colorado.

Minnesota Timberwovles guard Tyus Jones tries to defend Kyrie Irving as he drives to the basket against the Boston Celtics

Report: Timberwolves could re-sign Tyus Jones

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

According to Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s Minnesota Timberwolves writer Chris Hines believes that the team would attempt to re-sign Tyus Jones this summer. He adds that Jones and interim head coach Ryan Saunders have a good relationship.

Jeff Teague could throw a monkey wrench in the situation. If he exercises his $19 million player option for the 2019-20 season, he would limit the team’s flexibility.

Jones will be a restricted free agent. That means when a team signs Jones, the Timberwolves have an option to match his offer.

Besides Teague’s option, Rose is on a one-year deal. Jones has a $3.5 million qualifying offer for the 2019-20 season.

He has been the third-string point guard, behind Teague and Derrick Rose, who has turned back the clock this season to the young D-Rose.

The 22-year-old Burnsville, Minnesota native was traded to the Timberwolves from the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was acquired by the Wolves for two 2015 second-round draft picks.

He was the Cavaliers No. 24 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Jones is in his fourth season in the league. He has appeared in 49 games with eight starts.

He is averaging a career-best 5.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game. Jones is averaging 20.9 minutes per contest.

Timberwolves’ KAT involved in car accident

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

According to Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders, Karl-Anthony Towns was in a car accident on Thursday. The incident happened when he was traveling to the airport.

The team did not release details on the accident. However, he did fly with the team to New York Thursday night.

On Friday morning, he was excused from shoot around, while he rested at the hotel, according to Saunders. The Timberwolves have now listed Towns as questionable for tonight’s game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden at 7:30 pm.

If he doesn’t play, he’ll be the third Minnesota player sidelined for the game. Robert Covington is already out with a right knee bone bruise.
In addition, Gorgui Dieng is also out for ‘personal reasons.’

The Timberwolves presently have a 27-30 record. They are 14.5 games behind the Western Conference-leading Golden State Warriors, who have a 42-16 record.

Minnesota is also four games out of a potential playoff spot. The Los Angeles Clippers presently have the eighth seed with a 32-27 record.

The 23-year-old Edison, New Jersey native — who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft — has started all 57 games this season. If he does miss this game with the Knicks, it’ll be the first game he misses all season.

He is averaging 23.1 points, 12 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.9 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game. He is averaging 33.1 minutes per contest.

Timberwolves release forward James Nunnally

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

The Minnesota Timberwolves released forward James Nunnally. With his release, their roster now stands at 16 players.

The 28-year-old San Jose, California native played 13 games with the Wolves this season after not playing in the Association the past four years. His release came hours after Minnesota fired head coach Tom Thibodeau following Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Basketball

He averaged 2.1 points, 0.3 rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 0.1 steals in 4.9 minutes per game.

He did not play in Sunday’s game against the Lakers. He last suited up for the Wolves against the Orlando Magic on January 4th.

He received two minutes and 31 seconds on the court. However, he did not register a statistic. The last time, Nunnally scored in a game was on December 21st when the Wolves were defeated by the Sacramento Kings. He had six points in four minutes and 19 seconds on the court.

The six points were the second-most points he had in a game this season. He had a season-high 9 points when the Wolves were defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks on October 26th, 2018.

Former Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau yells at his team against the Denver Nuggets

Minnesota Timberwolves fires head coach Tom Thibodeau

By Anthony Caruso III | Publisher

The Minnesota Timberwolves fired head coach and President of Basketball Operations Tom Thibodeau on Sunday. The move happened shortly after the Wolves defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 108-86.

The win improved the Wolves record to 19-21. The win over the Lakers improved their home record 14-6.

One year after making the playoffs, the Wolves are presently 11th in the Western Conference. Thibodeau was fired by Minnesota CEO Ethan Casson and GM Scott Layden.

“We would like to thank Tom for his efforts and wish him all the best,” said Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor. “These decisions are never easy to make, but we felt them necessary to move our organization forward.”

This move is expected to help reshape their basketball operations staff. Layden will remain the general manager; however, according to sources, his future is murky at best.

Thibodeau clashed with one of the team’s stars, before Jimmy Butler was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in November. The Wolves did not receive equal value when Butler was moved.

But because Butler was not happy with the team, they had to move him and get something instead of letting the situation continue to drag out. Minnesota received Jerryd Bayless, Robert Covington, Dario Šarić, and a 2022 second-round pick for Butler and Justin Patton.

Assistant Coach Ryan Saunders will take over for the remainder of the season as Interim Head Coach. The 32-year-old Saunders, who is the son of the late Wolves Head Coach Flip Saunders, receives his first NBA Head Coaching opportunity.

Besides Thibodeau, the team also fired assistant coach Andy Greer.

Saunders was an assistant coach with the Wolves from 2014 through 2019 before his promotion. The Medina, Minnesota native also served as a Washington Wizards assistant coach from 20009 through 2014.

According to ESPN, Taylor has serious interest in hiring Fred Hoiberg as Head Coach. Hoiberg was fired earlier this season by the Chicago Bulls.
